Local Veteran Attends Dedication of New Monument in Dieppe, France
|
"As a Veteran of WWII,
I feel it is an honour and a privilege to be going over to Dieppe, France
on August 9, to place a monument to honour our fellow Comrades who gave
their all so that we can live in peace as we do today... We will always
remember them and with an organization such as the Windsor Historical
Society, we will carry the torch of those who have gone before us" -

Larry Costello was honoured to attend a Memorial Presentation in Dieppe, France, to dedicate a monument in honour of Canadian men who went to war in Dieppe and never returned. From August 9th - 20th, Mr. Costello visited several well known memorial sites, including Vimy Ridge, the War Graves, Dieppe and Cannes. Mr. Costello, a Veteran of WWII, assisted in raising funds for the new Monument, which represents a strong personal connection for him. His late brother, John Henry Costello, who served in the Canadian military for 6 years and 8 months, had survived the Dieppe battle. Previously, there was only a plaque in Dieppe recognizing Canadian troops who sacrificed their lives. But on August 19th/06, a new monument, designed by 18-year-old University of Windsor student, Rory O'Connor, was dedicated and unveiled. The monument incorporates a maple-leaf motif and is designed so that when sunlight falls over the monument, the maple leaf is shadowed. The 11-day trip to Dieppe, France, organized by Regimental Sergeant Major Kirk Drew, conveyed 95 Windsor residents: Veterans of the Essex Scottish Regiment, Naval Veterans, spouses, care-givers and Cadets. |
