Windsor Veterans Memorial Services Committee Celebrates 80th Anniversary
|
On June 3, the Windsor Veterans Memorial Services Committee celebrated its 80th anniversary at Legion Branch 143. Over 200 people attended the function which involved honouring living and deceased Veterans, recognizing the work of past Presidents and current Committee members, a festive dinner and live entertainment. The only organization of its kind in Canada, the Services Committee was created for the purpose of ensuring that no Veteran would be buried without being honoured. For eighty years, members have been responsible for raising funds to honourably bury deceased Veterans, holding ceremonies at funeral homes, establishing monuments and grave-markers in various cemeteries and organizing banquets, parades and memorial services - all to ensure that Veterans are not forgotten. Present Chairman, Wayne Hillman, was honoured at the anniversary celebration, as was former President, Larry Costello, who held the position for 14 years. The organization was originally formed in 1926 after WWI by ex-servicemen, Major Joe Brown and Clarence Forster and organized in 1933 as the Windsor Graves Committee. The committee was re-named, the Windsor Veterans Memorial Services Committee, in 1963. |
