Our Projects

Veterans' Memories Project:

The Veterans' Memories Project gathers stories and records audio/visual war-time testimonies from local veterans. This project benefits veterans' families and future generations by providing an online resource archive for public viewing. The Society is committed to education by frequenting local schools and sharing their life experiences with children. It is the Society's hope that its website and resources will be used as a tool to educate and inspire the public. A vital part of the Veterans' Memories Project is interviewing local veterans and video-recording their memories on war-time experiences. To date we have collected over 70 of these interviews as well as stories from family members of deceased veterans.

Veterans' Appreciation Day:

Since 2002, The Windsor Historical Society has hosted a Veterans' Appreciation Day dinner every November 11th. This event is an opportunity for the community to gather and celebrate the lives of its local veterans. Present at this celebration are the veterans, their families and friends, and community leaders. This event follows memorial ceremonies held each year at the Windsor Cenotaph. These events are filmed and available in the website's Photo/Video Gallery.

Veterans' Day Magazine:

Coinciding with the Veterans' Appreciation Day celebration has been the publication of our annual Veterans' Day Magazine which is read by tens of thousands of readers every year. This full-colour magazine includes news and information about the armed forces as well as the first-hand accounts of Veterans' wartime experiences. There are letters of appreciation to, from, and about our veterans by family members, elected officials, community leaders, spiritual leaders, and grateful citizens. Funding for Veterans' Day Magazine is made possible by advertisers and sponsors wishing to acknowledge, honour and thank our Veterans publicly with their own personalized message.

Veterans Speak To Students Project:

The Society's commitment to education is furthered by the Veterans Speak To Students Project which organizes events at local schools where community leaders, Veterans, and current soldiers share their life experiences with the students. The goal of the Veterans' Memories Project is to recognize and honour the Veterans who were responsible for securing the rights and freedoms enjoyed by all Canadians and to ensure that current and future generations are educated about the nature of warfare and encouraged to choose non-violent means of conflict resolution at every level of social interaction.
